Before Marty McFly travelled back in time, he was living in a 1985 where his father George McFly was still bullied by high school thug and now supervisor Biff Tannen. At the start of Back to the Future, Biff is around the McFlys house having borrowed George's car and crashed it. Fans will remember the film's villain blames George for this saying: "I can't believe you'd loan me your car without telling me it had a blind spot. I could've been killed!"

George replied: "Blind spot? Now, now, Biff, now I never noticed that the car had any blind spot before when I would drive it."

Before Biff said: "What, are you blind, McFly? It's there. How else do you explain that wreck out there?"

After suggesting the insurance pay for the car, the bully added: "My insurance? It's your car. Your insurance should pay for it. I wanna know who's gonna pay for this?"

He pointed at his own shirt and said: "I spilt beer all over it when the car smashed into me. Who's gonna pay my cleaning bill?"

Now a popular new fan theory argues that Biff had a blind spot because he'd previously only ever driven a convertible.

Reddit user joebadiah wrote: "This would explain his 'blind spot' complaint. He's always driven a convertible, which obviously has superior visibility over enclosed vehicles.

"He loved his car more than anything and would have held onto it [as] long as possible (perhaps up until days before).

"Or, if he'd gotten new cars they likely would have been convertibles too. Thus, he'd never learn to drive anything but a convertible."

The theorist continued: "The fact he is George McFly's boss, yet needs to borrow his car is presumably because he recently lost his vehicle (likely in [an] embarrassing fashion) and needed to take advantage of George yet again to drive wherever he needed to be that night (perhaps a business/social function).

"But after a few drinks he wasn't safe to drive, let alone in a Sedan style vehicle he had no experience driving.

"So while he may have actually spilt beer on himself, which likely contributed to or was collateral damage of the incident, I contend that inebriation plus the reduced 360 visibility of the McFly's Sedan created true blind spots for Biff and he was legitimately confused by them."

Adding a 'Too Long, Didn't Read' summary to the theory, they wrote: "Biff had only ever driven his convertible and while drunk didn't know how to see out of the McFly's Sedan as he'd never driven one before, so experienced true blind spots and wrecked the car."

Last year, Express.co.uk spoke with Back to the Future co-creator Bob Gale who shared why a fourth movie would never happen.

The producer and screenwriter said: "Y'know we kick around things every once in a while.

"But look, the bottom line is, doing Back to the Future without Michael J Fox is just not something that we want to see; I don't think anybody wants to see.

"To create a future version of Marty McFly where he has Parkinson's disease…that really doesn't sit right."

Fox has lived with Parkinson's since 1991 and has been semi-retired from acting for 20 years as his symptoms have worsened.

Gale continued: "We've all seen sequels where they did one too many, or two or three too many.

"We just said, 'Y'know what, these movies are great the way they are, let's just leave them alone.' Because the conversation then always becomes, 'Why did they make another one?!'"

Luckily for UK fans, the franchise lives on in other forms with Back to the Future the musical hitting London's West End from August 20, 2021.
